championship at stake

Growing up, Erica McCall always dreamed of following in the footsteps of her older sister, DeWanna Bonner, in playing in the WNBA and hopefully winning a championship.

But even once McCall made it to the league, she never imagined that one day she and Bonner would both be competing in the WNBA semifinals — and that there’d be a chance they could play each other for a championship.

the best guys in New England.”

Like Hackett, Dinzeo’s last road race was also the Olympic Marathon Trials.

“I think all of us are coming from situations where we haven’t been able to race much,” Dinzeo said. “This is a good rust buster.”

In the women’s race, another high school runner was able to hang around with the region’s best.

Marianapolis Prep senior Sydney Masciarelli, a national high school cross country and track champion who will run at North Carolina next year, finished third (16:43) behind Crevoiserat and Kate Raphael of Cambridge, Mass. (16:40). Olympic Marathon Trial qualifier Annmarie Tuxbury of New Hartford was fourth (16:46).

Crevoiserat, who ran at UConn and Oregon, had control of the race from the start Saturday, with Tuxbury, Masciarelli and former NAIA national champion Anna Shields all in the mix.

“I’ve been doing a lot of time trials so I know where I am fitness-wise, but it’s so much more fun to race,” said Crevoiserat, 27, of Hartford. “I’ve been out [of competition] for so many years. I like being back and being able to compete with the best.”

Shields finished eighth in 16:56. A former Lewis Mills High School star who won 10 national championships at Point Park University, she reminisced about running against

Crevoiserat in high school and said Crevoiserat broke her state mile record.

“This is first race I’ve done since indoor season,” said Shields, who ran a personal best for a road 5K. “I thought it was great to PR off the track.”
