Garcia also in mix as possible 3rd starting arm

- YANKEES NOTES By Kristie Ackert

NEW YORK — Deivi Garcia gave the Yankees something to think about Saturday.

If they need a third starter in the best-of-three game wildcard round, the 21-year-old rookie has pitched well enough to put his name in the mix. So too has veteran lefty J.A. Happ. Rookie Clarke Schmidt said he considered his Sunday start as an audition to get into that mix.

Aaron Boone was not tipping his hand on the decision after Garcia pitched 6 ⅔ strong innings in the Yankees’ 11-4 win over the Marlins on Saturday.

“No, we’ll talk that over,” the Yankees manager said. “Look, I mean the opponent will come into these decisions. Both guys are going to play a significant role for us in the playoffs. We expect to go deep in this thing ,and both guys are going to start games for us.

“There’ll be a lot of things that we discussed to come to the decision, but you know, whether it’s Deivi, Happ or [Jordan Montgomery], all those guys are going to play a huge role for us moving forward.”

Garcia, who struggled in his last start, just wanted to finish his rookie season strong. He allowed four runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out a career-high seven.

“It’s important to me to finish up the season with a good outing, and to have the opportunity to do that,” Garcia said. “And if I could keep pitching, executing, the opportunities are going to come.

“And like I said, I enjoy the competition. I go out there and have fun competing.”

Get ready to celebrate: DJ LeMahieu on Sunday could be the first man to win the batting title in both the American and National League in baseball’s modern era.

The Yankees’ versatile infielder, whose ability to hit consistently earned him the nickname “The Machine,” finished play Saturday hitting .359, which led the major leagues.

Luke Voit’s 22nd home run put more distance between him and the rest of the major-league sluggers.

Jose Abreu went into the White Sox’s game Saturday three behind Voit. Mike Trout, Jose Ramirez and Marcel Ozuna were five back.

Voit would become the first Yankee since Alex Rodriguez in 2007 to finish with the most home runs in baseball.
