Pierson’s 2 goals boost New Hampshire past UConn

Jackson Pierson tied things midway through the third period and then won it in overtime as New Hampshire defeated UConn 2-1 in a Hockey East Conference game on Saturday at the Frietas Ice Forum in Storrs.

UConn, which had a two-game win streak snapped, jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 5:35 of the second period when Marc Gatcomb beat Wildcats goalie Mike Robinson with his third goal of the season.

Pierson tied things up at 12:48 of the third and then won the game, beating UConn goalie Tomas Vomacka at 1:45 of the overtime period.

Vomacka had 31 saves for UConn (3-5-1), while Robinson had 36 for New Hampshire (2-2-1).

Men’s basketball

Hartford 76, Binghamton 56: At West Hartford, D.J. Mitchell scored 17 points - including 4 of 6 from three-point range, and the Hawks rolled to the America East Conference win.

Austin Williams added 12 points for Hartford and Traci Carter chipped in 12 points. Miroslav Stafl had 10 points and nine rebounds for Hartford (6-4, 3-2 America East Conference), which earned its fifth straight home victory.

Tyler Bertram had 16 points for the Bearcats (1-7, 1-4). Brenton Mills added 10 points. Bryce Beamer had nine rebounds.

Fairfield 72, Rider 56: Jake Wojcik had 13 points as Fairfield defeated visiting Rider in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game.

Zach Crisler added 11 points for the Stags, and Taj Benning chipped in 10 points.

Chris Maidoh had 10 rebounds for Fairfield (2-9, 2-4 MAAC), which snapped its four-game losing streak. Fairfield totaled 37 first-half points, a season best for the team.

Dontrell McQuarter had 12 points for the Broncs (2-7, 2-4). Ajiri Ogemuno-Johnson added 10 points and nine rebounds. Dwight Murray Jr. had six rebounds.

The Stags leveled the season series against the Broncs with the win. Rider defeated Fairfield 70-62 last Friday.

Women’s basketball

Hartford 64, Binghamton 54: Breyenne Bellerand had a game-high 16 points and Sierra Smith had 21 rebounds to lead the Hawks to their third straight win, an American East victory at Binghamton, N.Y.

Jada Lucas added 13 points for the Hawks (3-2, 3-2) Binghamton is 1-6 and 1-4.
