McGuire lifts Quinnipac past Niagara, 78-69 Women’s basketball

Brendan McGuire had 19 points and 10 rebounds off the bench to lift Quinnipiac to a 78-69 win over Niagara on Saturday at Hamden.

Seth Pinkney had 15 points and three assists for Quinnipiac (4-6, 2-4 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference), which snapped its four-game losing streak. JacobRigon­iadded11po­ints, joing the 1,000 point club.

Marcus Hammond had 22 points and six rebounds for the Purple Eagles (6-8, 5-7). Kobi Nwandu added 20 points. Greg Kuakumensa­h had 10 points. Niagara defeated Quinnipiac 59-56 on Friday.

Mount St. Mary’s 81, Central Connecticu­t State 52: At Emmitsburg, Md., the Moutaineer­s did not allow a Central player to reach double figures in scoring as they rolled to the Northeast Conference win.

Emma McCamus and Angelique Rodriguez each scored nine points to lead the Blue Devils (2-3, 2-3). Ashley Forker had six points and eight rebounds.

Michaela Harrison had 16 points for Mount St. Mary’s (5-3, 4-1).

Rider 77, Quinnipiac 74 (OT): At Lawrence Township, N.J., Rose Caverly missed a three-point shot at the buzzer in overtime as the Bobcats dropped the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference road game.

Amani Free led Quinnipiac (7-5, 5-3 MAAC) with 25 points and Mikala Morris added 17 points and 10 rebounds. The loss snapped a four-game win streak.

Men’s hockey

Quinnipiac 1, Clarkson 1: At Potsdam, N.Y., Zach Tsekos managed the lone goal in the shootout portion as the Golden Knights and Bobcats tied for the second consecutiv­e game. Ethan de Jong managed the lone goal for the 10th-ranked Bobcats in regulation. Mathieu Gosselin scored in regulation for No. 14 Clarkson.

Women’s hockey

Boston College 2, UConn 1 (OT): At Chestnut Hill, Mass., Jillian Fay scored at 2:51 of overtime to lift the No. 8 Eagles. UConn had led for the majority of the game after Viki Harkness’ goal at 14:58 of the first period.
