Dennis P. Sullivan, 99, passed away peacefully into the arms of the Lord on February 12, 2021, surrounded by family. He was born on February 5, 1922 in Somerville, MA to Catherine (Gibbons) and John Sullivan as the youngest of six children. He attended St. John High School in Cambridge, MA and Boston University. He was a proud U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in Code Intelligen­ce in the Pacific Theater. Upon returning home he worked for the US Railway Mail System. He married Lorraine Riley and moved to Connecticu­t. He then began his career with the US Treasury Department Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Tax (ATF). In 1965 he transferre­d to the US Department of Labor. On March 4, 1981, he received an award for Distinguis­hed Career Service from the Secretary of Labor. He retired in January, 1983, culminatin­g 42 years of Federal Government service. Dennis continued working various jobs until the age of 75. Dennis held a strong conviction in his Catholic faith. It was the bedrock of how he lived his life. He always recognized his blessings of family, friends and of his long, happy and healthy life. He supported the works of many charities and their ministries, whether local or worldwide. Dennis was gifted with a quick wit that gave him the great pleasure of storytelli­ng and humor with family and friends. He was an avid reader of most all subject matter. He loved golf, gardening and furniture refinishin­g. Other interests included the Gaelic language and graphology. Dennis volunteere­d at MDA and MS functions and walka-thons as well as the Irish American Home and was the recipient of the member of the year of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick’s 50th Anniversar­y in 2018. He was a Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots fan. Dennis was predecease­d by his wife Lorraine in 1971, leaving him to raise his two sons. He did so with compassion and sacrifice. As a long-time resident of West Hartford, he was a communican­t of Saint Brigid Church. Since 2003, Dennis was a parishione­r St. Mary Church in Simsbury.

He leaves his two sons, Mark and his wife Cherith of Farmington, CT and their daughter Catherine with whom he shared his home and Michael and his Fiancé Lorna Venezuela-Hityo of West Hartford and his children, Hilda, Deolinda, Matthew and Joseph Moreno. Dennis will also be remembered by many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predecease­d by all five of his siblings, John, Alexander, Kathleen, Patrick and Mortimer. When asked about the secret of his longevity, Dennis would reply “Keep breathing.”

Ruth M. (Jorgensen) Urso, 74, of Windsor, loving fiancé to Robert Smith, of Berlin, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 16, 2021 at the Hospital of Central Connecticu­t in New Britain after a courageous battle with cancer. Ruth was born in Hartford on November 19, 1946, daughter to the late Henry and Marie (LaFleur) Jorgensen.

Ruth grew up in Windsor, attended local schools and was a graduate of Windsor High School, Class of 1964. Ruth was employed for over fifteen years with the Automobile Club of Hartford, where she earned the title of Assistant Corporate Secretary. Throughout her employment there, she assisted in various topics from recruiting and hiring to training of the staff to problem resolution between employees and various medical/life insurance companies. After her retirement in 1991, Ruth worked as a Case Manager/Homecare Provider for the Duncaster Retirement Community in Bloomfield. Shortly following her employment at Duncaster, she went back to school where she earned her B.S. in Business Administra­tion/Management from Teikyo Post University graduating in 1997. Ruth was a member of the Westbrook Elks Lodge #1784 as well as very involved with the Windsor Historical Society. Ruth had a love for the outdoors and was an avid gardener. In her spare time, she enjoyed house-hold DYI projects and was very interested in the stock markets, always keeping an eye on what was going on, and always looked forward to her dance outings with her fiancé, Bob. Ruth’s kind and caring personalit­y will be missed by her family and friends.

In addition to her fiancé, Ruth is survived by her son Gary D. Urso Sr. and his wife Wendy of Granby; her three grandchild­ren Rebecca Urso of Windsor Locks, Gary D. Urso Jr. of Windsor and Aaron Urso of Magnolia,TX; a great-grandson Noah Urso; a sister Evelyn Machung of Vernon; two nieces Dawn Segar and her husband Chip of Old Saybrook and Sheri Wilcox and her husband Tim of Ponte Vedra, FL, as well as many other nieces, nephews, cousins and very special friends.

A time of visitation will be held on Thursday, February 25, 2021 from 10-11 a.m. at the Carmon Poquonock Funeral Home, 1816 Poquonock Ave. (Rte 75) Windsor, with a prayer service to begin at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Poquonock. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
