Carol (Gervin) Bates, 76, of Avon and formerly of West Hartford, wife of the late William Calvin Bates, passed away peacefully on August 17, 2021. Born in Washington, DC, she was the daughter of the late Sydney A. Gervin, Jr. and Vera (Kepp) Gervin of Jacksonvil­le, Florida. Raised in

Jacksonvil­le, Carol attended Bartram and graduated from Sullins and Jones Colleges with degrees in Business. In 1968 she married James R Marsh Jr and had two sons. During her years in Jacksonvil­le Carol enjoyed spending time at Ponte Vedra Beach and Timuquana Country Club. Carol was a member of the Junior League of Jacksonvil­le. After moving to West Hartford in 1977, she married William C Bates who had two daughters. She took such pride in blending the two families together. Carol had a successful career as an interior decorator and was also in retail sales at Nordstrom's, Sage Allen, and Filene's. Carol also loved to cook, fish, garden, and she enjoyed playing tennis. She loved family and especially Christmas, where she would always have her gifts wrapped beautifull­y for all of her family members. She passed on the tradition of picking out special Christmas ornaments for each child to be placed on the tree.

Carol was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in West Hartford, CT. She leaves two sons James R. Marsh III and his wife Kelly of Avon, CT; Sydney S. Marsh and his wife Dawne of Waxhaw, NC; two daughters, Katherine A. Baranauska­s of South Windsor, CT and Carey A. Bates of Brooklyn, NY; 11 grandchild­ren, her brother Sydney A. Gervin, III and his wife Deborah of Jacksonvil­le, FL; 3 nephews, her sister in-law Susan B. Margraf and brother-in-law Dr. James H. Margraf of Keene, NH, and their 2 children and her beloved Bichon Frise, George. A private memorial service for the family

will be held August 27, 2021, at the Carmon Funeral Home & Family Center, 301 Country Club Road, Avon, CT. To celebrate Carol's life her family will receive friends from 2:30pm-4:30pm at the Golf Club of Avon, 160 Country Club Road, Avon CT.
