Dowdell, Johnnie Mae (Bell)
Johnnie Mae Dowdell, 82, of Bloomfield, beloved wife for 60 years of Pink Dowdell, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 12, 2021, at Hartford Hospital. Born in Buena Vista, GA on July 1, 1939, daughter of the late John and Janie Mae (Thomas) Bell, she was raised in Georgia and moved to Hartford with her family in 1957. Johnnie trained to work as a certified nurse's aide and upon receiving her certification, she took a position with Mediplex of Wethersfield where she stayed until her retirement in 2004 after over 20 years of service. Johnnie was an excellent cook and baker and was wellknown for her German Chocolate cakes and sweet potato pies all of which she made from scratch. A devout Christian throughout her life, Johnnie was a longtime
member of the Greater St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church in Windsor, where she took part in many activities within the life of the church. Most of all, Johnnie will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Besides her husband, she leaves to mourn her passing, a daughter, Denise C. Kimbrough of Bloomfield; four grandchildren, Schercitha “Renee” Gordon and her husband Kelvin of Windsor, Dashana Rush of Hartford, Paris Dowdell of Bloomfield, Monesha D. Durant of Springfield, MA; four great-grandchildren, Chynna Adams, Na'Zayr, Sincere, and Brooklynn Rush all of Hartford; three great-great-grandchildren, Javien Smalling, Jakai Smalling, and Sirye Smalling all of Hartford; a sister, Eva Mae James of Hartford; two sisters-in-law, Rev. Carolyn Bell of Manchester and Geneva Idlette of Hartford; two special cousins who grew-up with her as siblings, Grace Boyd of East Hartford and
Eddie Bell of North Carolina; and a host of other relatives and friends too numerous to mention. She was predeceased by a daughter, Tracy Lynn Dowdell; seven brothers, George, Virgil “Sam”, J.C., Eugene, Jessie, Joseph, and Ruben Bell; a brother-in-law, Leroy Dowdell; and a special cousin, Rudene Shaw. Her family will receive friends on Tuesday, September 28, 10-11 a.m., followed by a Homegoing Service at 11 a.m., at The Lodge Community Chapel, 130 Deerfield Rd., Windsor.
