Conard’s Gavin Sherry sets New England two-mile record
Conard senior Gavin Sherry broke a meet record in the two-mile at the New England high school track and field championships Saturday at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.
Sherry finished in 8:51.59, breaking the meet record of 8:53.25.
Other state winners were the Hall boys 4x400 relay team of Jonathan York, Sean McDaniel, Tobias Ruffo and Samuel Sandler in 3:23.84; the Sheehan girls 4x200 relay team of Erin Brennan, Patrice Mansfield, Amanda Castaldi and Avery Winters in 1:44.04; the Glastonbury 4x800 relay team of Annika Paluska, Kylie Hilliard, Ava Gattinella and Brooke Strauss of 9:29.14; Simsbury’s Timothy Watson in the high jump (6-9); Conard’s
Audrey Kirkutis in the high jump (5-7); Somers’ Rachel St. Germain in the two mile (10:36.93); Greenwich’s Gianluca Biachi in the 300 (35.36); Fairfield Ludlowe’s Anna Keeley in the mile (5:01.52) and Danbury’s Alanna Smith, who tied the meet record in the 300 (38.22) and won the 55 meters (7.10).
Woodstock Academy wins gymnastics championship
Woodstock Academy won the State Open gymnastics title Saturday at New Milford High with 141.525 points and Hand finished second (139.575).
Woodstock’s Taylor Markley won the all-around title (38.775) and won the vault (9.8), the uneven bars (9.75), the beam (9.65) and the floor exercise title (9.75).
Heslin, Johns runners-up at New England wrestling
At the New England wrestling championships Saturday, three Connecticut wrestlers won titles while two finished as runners-up. Xavier freshman Jackson Heslin, the State Open champion, finished as runner-up in 106 pounds, as did Zach Johns of Simsbury, also a State Open champ, at 152. Christopher Murphy of Guilford (195), William Ebert of Fairfield Warde (170) and Jack Richardson of Killingly (145) won titles.
