Providence stays hot, defeats St. John’s; Georgetown loses again

Noah Locke scored 20 points as Providence won its ninth straight, defeating visiting St. John’s 83-80 in a Big East Conference game on Saturday.

Locke was 7 of 11 shooting (5 for 8 from distance) for the Friars (14-3, 6-0 Big East). Devin Carter scored 19 points while shooting 5 of 11 from the field and 8-for-9 from the line, and added five rebounds and five assists. Ed Croswell was 5 of 6 shooting and 4 of 9 from the free throw line to finish with 14 points. The Friars extended their winning streak to nine games.

The Red Storm (11-6, 1-5) were led in scoring by Joel Soriano, who finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Posh Alexander added 14 points and two steals for St. John’s. O’Mar Stanley also put up 13 points.

Croswell scored nine points in the first half and Providence went into the break trailing 40-39. Providence outscored St. John’s (NY) by four points in the second half. Carter led the way with 12 second-half points. Marquette 95, Georgetown 73: At Milwaukee, Kam Jones’ 17 points helped Marquette extend the Hoyas’ record Big East Conference losing streak to 26.

Jones also had five rebounds for the Golden Eagles (13-4, 5-1 Big East). Oso Ighodaro scored 14 points, shooting 7 of 8 from the field. Stevie Mitchell recorded 12 points and finished 5 of 7 from the field.

Windsor’s Primo Spears led the Hoyas (5-12, 0-6) in scoring, finishing with 18 points and seven assists.

Joran Riley added 16 points for Georgetown. Wayne Bristol Jr. also had 16 points and two steals. The loss was the Hoyas’ seventh straight.

Ighodaro scored 10 points in the first half and Marquette went into the break trailing 36-34. Jones scored 15 points down the stretch in the second half to help lead Marquette to a 22-point victory.

Sacred Heart 78, Hartford 71:

At Hartford, Nico Galette’s 21 points helped Sacred Heart past the Hawks. Galette also contribute­d eight rebounds for the Pioneers (9-9). Tanner Thomas scored 13 points and added six rebounds.

The Hawks (4-13) were led in scoring by Michael Dunne, who finished with 17 points. Briggs McClain added 17 points and two steals for Hartford. In addition, Kurtis Henderson finished with 13 points. The Hawks extended their losing streak to seven in a row. Stonehill 51, Central Connecticu­t State 49: At South Easton, Mass., Max Zegarowski scored 16 points as Stonehill beat the Blue Devils.

Zegarowski also contribute­d seven rebounds for the Skyhawks (7-11). Isaiah Burnett added 10 points while going 2 of 7 from the floor, including 2-for-6 from distance, and 4-for-4 from the line. Andrew Sims shot 4 of 11 from the field and 2-for-4 from the line to finish with 10 points.

Kellen Amos led the way for the Blue Devils (4-14) with 16 points and two steals.
