- Please sign guestbook at courant.com/obituaries

Mary Catharine (Metcalf) Marchessault went to be with God on January 12, 2023, at age 95. Mary (Mom, Mem, Met) was born to Clarence Ivan Metcalf and Grace (Noble) Metcalf on April 19, 1927, and raised in the farm life of Ellington and Rockville, graduating from Rockville High School in 1945 and then on to the Rhode Island School of Design, BFA in Interior Design, Class of 1949. After graduation, Mary and her closest girlfriends packed up and took off for a cross-country road trip, camping under the stars and visiting many national parks.

Mary worked in Boston, then settled in Hartford, doing work in design and decorating, work that led her to meet her husband Roland (Ron) who worked at the G. Fox & Company for over 43 years. They were wed in September, 1953 at Asylum Hill Congregational Church in Hartford. Mary and Ron enjoyed the company of a great circle of friends and co-workers for many years in Hartford, and as their family grew, they moved to West Hartford to a home and community they enjoyed together until Ron's passing in 1990. Mary was an avid gardener and floral arranger ("Merry Weeders of WH"), always content to spend hours tending to her flowers and listening to the birds. Even as Mary moved to her Bloomfield condo, she proudly continued her gardening for both her unit and the community areas. Another area of interest for Mary was to teach Sunday morning art classes to the children of South Congregational Church in Hartford for many years.

In addition to her early career in Hartford, and raising three rambunctious boys, Mary spent many memorable years at the Jewish Community Center in Bloomfield teaching in the pre-school program, nurturing and loving the kids and building life-long friendships with the other teachers there.

For the past 11 years, Mary resided first in the memory care unit at Seabury in Bloomfield, and in recent years she had been at the Suffield House in Suffield, under the care and attention of a great team of staff and practitioners who truly filled Mary's days with contentment and love.

Mary was predeceased by her parents and her brothers Homer Noble Metcalf and Richard Leslie Metcalf. Mary and Ron have 3 sons, Marc (Janet) Marchessault of Latham, NY, Dean (Joan) Marchessault of Cinnaminson, NJ, and Craig (Maureen) Marchessault of Wappinger's Falls, NY. She was blessed with and loved the company of her seven grandchildren: Dana (Ben) Niu, Scott (Jessica) Marchessault, Lisa Marchessault, Kate (Andrew) Pelletier, Anne (David) Hassis, John (Erica) Marchessault, David (Kerri) Marchessault, and the six great-grandchildren, Hannah, Alex, Jace, Romy, Bryce, and Hudson.

The family will be gathering soon to privately pay their final respects to this strong woman, teacher, mother, grandmother, wife, friend, and community citizen.
