Landry, Michael A.

-

It is with heavy hearts we share the passing of Michael A. Landry on March 9th, 2023 after a long and courageous battle with kidney cancer and Alzheimer's Disease.

Michael was an incredible human – the salt of the Earth. He was kind, compassionate, a friend to all. A teacher, a coach, a traveler, a lover of Blues. He was an avid Boston Celtics and St. Louis Cardinals fan, an innovator in math and technology, the best father, the most loyal husband and a loving grandfather; more than any family could ask for. His favorite city in the world was Paris, but really his favorite place was with his wife and family. He taught his daughters how to be empathetic, blindly optimistic, to appreciate and love every aspect of life. Our hearts are broken with his passing, but his passion for life and love will live on in every person he met and every heart that he touched.

Michael was born in Meriden, CT on January 20th, 1946 to Dorothy and Anthony Landry, Michael was raised and educated in New Britain, CT. Michael graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas High School and CCSU with a degree in Mathematics.

Michael began his professional career as an educator in Thomaston, CT, teaching math. Continuing his love of sports, Michael coached cross country, basketball, and track and field. The highlight of his coaching career was winning the CT Class S Championship in Cross Country in 1973, in addition to being actively involved in his daughters' sports careers while they were young.

Continuing his passion for travel, adventure and education, Michael, with his family, went to teach at the American School of The Hague in The Hague, Netherlands, and the International School of Kuala Lumpur in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. While there, he coached school sports teams at venues in Paris, Vienna, Brussels, and Jakarta, to name a few.

Returning to the states and after earning his Master's Degree and ABD in Computer Education from Columbia University, NYC, he went on to teach Computer Education in Torrington, CT, initiating one of the first school-wide computer education programs in the State. He followed that as Director of Mathematics in Glastonbury, CT, ending his academic career as Assistant Superintendent of Schools for Region 10, Burlington and Harwinton. Michael's integrity and hard-working nature was known by all and he was dearly loved and respected by students and faculty no matter where he was.

Michael was proud of helping to organize the first Litchfield Hills Road Race in 1977 and of his political involvement in A Connecticut Party in Litchfield.

Michael leaves behind the love of his life, Irene Landry, after 52 years of marriage, and his daughters and their families, Kimberly Wallengren, her husband Jason and grandchildren Bellamy and Leiden, and Katherine Alibozak, her husband Mitchell, and grandchildren Everett and soon-to-be-born Isla Grace.

Michael will also be sorely missed by his sister Judith Barham, her husband Dennis, and sons Andrew and Trevor, as well as his brother David Landry, his wife Lexi Landry, and children, Marc and Nicole. He also leaves his sister-in-law Michelle Malinowski.

And at the top of the list, he will be missed most of all by his loving mutt, Riley, his best friend.

A memorial service will take place at the Morris Congregational Church in Morris, CT on June 16th at 10:00am. If you have any anecdotal stories about your adventures and exploits with Michael, you are invited to share them at that time. Please join us for A Celebration of Life following the service, details to be announced.

We ask you not to mourn Michael, but rather raise a beer or a bourbon to this extraordinary man and his extraordinary life.
