Susanne E. Mantel, 88, of Newington, died Monday April 24, 2023 at Hartford Hospital. She was born in Luebeck, Germany to Frank Broell and Meta Markwart on August 24, 1934. Her mother passed away in 1935, and in 1937 Frank Broell remarried to Bertha Schuster. Susanne's family then moved to Hamburg, Germany and eventually immigrated to the U.S. in 1951 aboard the steamship S.S. Homeland. She graduated from the Harrisburg Polyclinic nursing school of Pennsylvan­ia in 1956. She moved to Hartford, Connecticu­t, and married James Marcellus Wiest. She gave birth to James Marc Wiest in 1959. From then on, she worked at Hartford Hospital and St. Francis Hospital until the late 1960's, when she began her long career at Aetna Life and Casualty Company as an Occupation­al Health Nurse. Because of her long interest in furthering her education, she pursued a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing, which she received in 1984 from Saint Joseph College. In 1986, her husband passed away. She remarried in 1995 to Ansgar Mantel at Trinity Episcopal Church. Susanne was an active member of Trinity Episcopal Church for several decades. She taught Sunday School classes, volunteere­d with Loaves and Fishes, and participat­ed with the church book group and adult Christian education. She enjoyed reading, trips to Cape Cod and Vermont, listening to classical music and crossword puzzles.

Besides her son, Susanne is survived by her sister, Anna Barbara Broell Bresnick; her niece Johanna Bresnick Arias; her nephew-in-law Dimitri Arias; and grandnephe­ws Joaquin and Elan Arias. She is also survived by her brother-in-law Bruno Theodore (Ted) Mantel; nieces Susan Mantel, Dorothea Scheer and Christiane Scheer; and a host of relatives in Europe. She will be remembered for her love of children, art, books, and cats. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 6, 2023, at Trinity Episcopal Church, 120 Sigourney Street, Hartford, CT. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Trinity Episcopal Church in Hartford. Arrangemen­ts are being handled by The Ahern Funeral Homes, Inc., www.ahernfuner­alhome.com.
