Dr. Joseph W. Belkin died peacefully at home with his family on April 28, 2023, at the age of 97. The son of Edith and Lewis Belkin, he was born and raised in New Britain, Connecticu­t. While a senior at New Britain High School he was accepted into the Navy V-12 program for aspiring medical doctors during WWII. The Navy sent him to The College of The Holy Cross and then at the age of 19 he was enrolled at The University of Maryland School of Medicine. Upon graduation in 1949, he entered the General Surgery Residency at St. Vincents' Hospital in Bridgeport, Connecticu­t. There he met and fell in love with a young nurse, Margery Williams, who would become his wife. After finishing his training, he served as a Navy Surgeon with tours in San Diego and Japan and a deployment to the ArcticCirc­le. Upon completion of his tour of duty he returned to the practice of Surgery at New Britain General Hospital. Over decades in surgical practice, he was revered as a kind, dedicated, and gifted surgeon who touched the lives of countless patients and surgical trainees. He won numerous teaching awards from his residents and medical students and served as inspiratio­n to his son and grandson who went on to careers in surgery. Upon retirement from surgery, he re-invented himself as an Occupation­al Physician working at Otis Elevator in Farmington,Connecticu­t where he worked for over 11 years. He and Margery enjoyed traveling the world with their friends. He was an avid reader, a gifted artist, crossword puzzle enthusiast, chess and card player, as well as a frustrated golfer. He was a member of his beloved Country Club of Farmington for 55 years where he served as President. He was pre-deceased by his dear wife of 55 years, Margery, his son Larry, his brother Howard and his great grandson, Alec Malerba. He is survived by his daughter Paula and her husband Kevin Ray, his son Michael and his wife Basia Belkin and his daughter-in-law Lori Brock. He adored his seven grandchild­ren including Katherine Callan, Aimee Malerba, Danny Ray, Michael Belkin, Nathan Belkin, Elizabeth Shapiro, and Adam Shapiro. He was delighted by his six great-grandchild­ren including, Conor, Dylan, and Molly Callan, Bradley and ClaireMale­rba, and Isla Belkin. He is also survived by his beloved recent life partner Nicolette Wernick, sister-in-law Louise Belkinand brother-in-law Paul Williams. In his long and full 97 years Joe touched many lives. As a husband, son, brother, father, grandfathe­r, surgeon, colleague and friend, he enriched our lives and made the world better for everyone. He was a great man who was loved by all. He will be dearly missed and always held in our hearts. The memorial service will be private.
