Hungerford, Sally Robbins Morehouse

Sally R. Hungerford age 98 passed away peacefully on January 6, 2024 surrounded by her family in her home in Moodus, CT. Sally Robbins Morehouse was born Nov. 24, 1925 in Middletown, CT. Sally lived with her paternal aunt, Cora Morehouse, her cousin Lawrence Morehouse, and her father George Jones. Sally was a graduate of East and attended East Haddam

After her Aunt Cora's death, she lived with the Christians­on family from Haddam Neck. Sally studied to be a medical assistant in NY, but fell in love and married William Warren Hungerford in 1950. She moved back to Moodus where she lived most of her life and raised a family.

Sally and Warren had six children. Sally leaves behind her children William (Bill) Hungerford Jr., Gary Hungerford, George Hungerford and his wife Terri, Martha Hungerford Nijssen, and Lisa Hungerford. She is survived by nine grandchild­ren: Katie Picciano, Sara Hungerford, Ben Zimmerman, Elizabeth Harrison, Abraham Zimmerman, Rachel Hungerford, Amber Hungerford, Justin Nijssen, and Olivia Nijssen. She also has six great grandchild­ren: Emily, Nathan, Mara, Nola, Elliot, and Nehemiah. Sally was predecease­d by her husband William Warren Hungerford (1986), her oldest daughter Laurel Chester (2011), and her granddaugh­ter Ami Chester (2001).

During her children's childhoods, there was always a full house of friends visiting her children and extended family coming to stay. Sally was employed in the East Haddam Elementary school cafeteria for 30 years. After that, she volunteere­d at the Senior Center delivering meals on wheels. She also made baby quilts for children affected by AIDS through her church.

Sally was a member of the Haddam Neck Covenant Church for 82 years, the American Legion, the East Haddam's Grange, Historical Society, and Senior Centers.

Sally was known around town for her gracious spirit and good baking. She loved to bake coffee breads and cheesecake. She made hundreds of coffee breads through the years for her family, friends, customers, church, and senior center. She also loved to do crafts and for many years, especially when her children were growing up she made homemade Christmas wreaths, and sold them for extra Christmas money.

A celebratio­n of Sally's life will be held at the Haddam Neck Covenant Church in East Hampton, 17 Haddam Neck Rd. in the spring. Details to follow. Donations can be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 306 Industrial Park Rd, Middletown, CT. 06457.
