Democratic challenger Jane Garibay unseats Republican incumbent Scott Storms in 60th House District.

She Cites Her ‘Outreach’

WINDSOR — Democratic challenger Jane Garibay of Windsor won the race for the 60th House District seat Tuesday, defeating Republican incumbent Scott Storms of Windsor Locks.

Upon learning that she was victorious, Garibay, 63, said she felt “numb.”

Asked why she felt she beat a wellliked first-term incumbent, Garibay said she “would like to think it’s because of my outreach, listening and door-knocking.”

Garibay, a former Windsor Board of Education president, “estimated that she knocked on more than 3,000 doors in the two towns since winning a Democratic primary in August.

Storms, who estimated that he lost by about 500 votes unofficial­ly, said Tuesday that Garibay “ran a great campaign and I congratula­te her on the win.”

Asked what she planned to do when she begins her term as a state representa­tive in January, Garibay said she expects to continue learning and listening.

As for her legislativ­e agenda, Garibay said it included education, the state budget, the opioid crisis and sex traffickin­g, among other focuses.

Earlier Tuesday at a 60th District polling location, at Oliver Ellsworth School on Kennedy Road in Windsor, two women exiting said they voted for Garibay.

“She was out on the street, came to our neighborho­od and spoke to our causes,” said a woman who identified herself as Cassidy W. “That kind of dedication you can’t deny.”
