Maryland ousts UConn in NCAA field hockey

No. 2 Maryland ended defending champion UConn’s season Sunday with a 2-1 overtime victory in the second round of the NCAA field hockey tournament in College Park, Md. Freshman Abby Gooderham scored off a penalty corner at 23:35 for the fifth-ranked Huskies (19-4). Maryland (20-2) tied it two minutes later. The Terps were able to find the back of the net in overtime, at 76:57. Cheyenne Sprecher had four saves for UConn. … Bridgeport advanced to the East Regional final of the Division II women’s soccer tournament with a 3-0 home win over the College of St. Rose. The second-seeded Purple Knights (16-4-1) will play No. 5 LIU Post in the regional final Friday. … The Connecticu­t College men’s soccer team’s most successful season came to an end with a 1-0 loss to Ramapo in the second round of the NCAA Division III tourney in New London. The physical match featured the teams combining for seven yellow cards and 32 fouls. Joseph Fala headed in a goal off a free kick at 9:54 for Ramapo (17-3-2). AJ Marcucci made four saves for the Camels (13-3-2). … Wesleyan upset No. 2 Johnson & Wales 3-1 in the Providence Regional final to advance to the NCAA Division III volleyball quarterfin­als. The Cardinals (20-5) advance to the final eight for the first time. Johnson & Wales (33-2) lost for the first time since the season opener. … The University of New Haven (8-1) will play at West Chester (10-0) in the first round of the NCAA Division II football championsh­ips Saturday.
