Norwalk police said Friday morning that a man pulled from the water Thursday, who police initially said had died, has actually survived.

Norwalk police spokesperson Lt. Jared Zwickler said in a Friday morning release that the man is alive and in the intensive care unit at Norwalk Hospital.

In a previous press release distributed Thursday, the department had said that he man was pronounced dead at the hospital, after apparently going underwater in the Norwalk Harbor. (The Courant also reported Thursday that the man had died.)

Police said on Thursday that callers reported a man screaming in the water near the end of Second Street. Officers responded to the scene just after 6 a.m. Thursday, according to the original press release.

Two officers, Sgt. Garrett Kruger and Officer Gabriel Demott, then went into the water and brought the man back to shore for medical attention, police said.

Police have not publicly identified the man, but Zwickler said he is a Norwalk resident.

Police said Friday morning that the department’s detective bureau is still investigating the incident.
