Chargers name QB Herbert permanent starter

Anthony Lynn has taken the temporary starter tag off rookie QB Justin Herbert.

The Chargers coach on Thursday named Herbert as the starter for the rest of the season, beginning with Monday night’s game against the Saints in New Orleans.

Tyrod Taylor suffered a rib injury during a Week 1 victory and then suffered a punctured lung while receiving a pain-killing injection before the Chargers’ Sept. 20 game against the Chiefs.

Herbert, the No. 6 overall pick, has five TDpasses and three INTs in three losses.

■ Cowboys LTTyron Smith may miss the rest of the season because of a neck injury, ESPN reported. The 29-year-old seven-time Pro Bowler returned from a two-game injury absence Sunday but suffered a setback. ... Ravens QB Lamar Jackson missed his second straight practice because of a knee injury, but ESPN reported that the team doesn’t believe the reigning MVP’s injury is serious.

College football: Kansas coach Les Miles tested positive for COVID-19 and is quarantini­ng in his home, where he plans to fulfill his coaching responsibi­lities remotely as the Jayhawks spend a week off before visiting West Virginia. So far, Miles, 66, hadn’t developed symptoms.

Crawford, 35, spent the first 13 seasons of his career with the Blackhawks, winning two Stanley Cup championsh­ips. ... Hurricanes forward Justin Williams retired after 19 seasons and three Cup championsh­ips. Williams, 39, won his first Cup in 2006 with the Hurricanes and then added two titles with the Kings, winning playoff MVP honors in 2014. He returned to the Hurricanes for the 2017-18 season. Williams also played for the Flyers and Capitals.
