Gase won’t change offense with Flacco in for Darnold

- By Manish Mehta

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — “Super Joe” Flacco from South Jersey is riding in on his white horse and surgically repaired neck to save the day for a fractured franchise with their future former head coach.

Desperation left Florham Park long ago, replaced by a malaise reserved for the eternally lost.

The sobering news that Sam Darnold is out until further notice with a shoulder injury suffered 10 days ago is the latest punch to the Jets’ collective solar plexus.

Apathy has a vice grip on a frustrated fanbase forced to stomach 13 more weeks of poor play, excuses and passive-aggressive digs from a Dead Man Walking.

Adam Gase is the whipping boy as team decision makers seek shelter, living in an insulated world of delusion, where up is down, black is white and a charlatan is hailed as a member of Mensa.

Perhaps it’s fitting that this wayward outfit will have an aging quarterback coming off neck surgery at the helm against the Cardinals on Sunday.

Talk about Must-Not See TV.

Flacco might or might not have been elite long ago, but this much is certain: The former Super Bowl MVPis going to be challenged like never before given the state of the Jets.

The Cardinals might have a pedestrian defense, but the veteran signal caller has plenty of forces working against him.

Although logic dictates that Gase should tailor his offense to Flacco’s strengths, which are markedly different than the guy he’s replacing, the head coach acted as if it will be business as usual despite the quarterback change.

How much will the Jets offense change with a stationary 35-year-old quarterback making his first start for his new team instead of a mobile 23-year-old quarterback in his second year in the system?

“I mean,” Gase said. “It doesn’t.”

Come again?

Surely, this must be a ruse. Gase has to be joking.

Even he isn’t stubborn enough to force Flacco to play in this dreadful offense, right? This has to be the coach’s attempt to lighten the mood during these dark days.

It seems obvious that Gase should tailor a scheme around Flacco’s strengths.
