Purdue coach tests positive for COVID-19

-

Purdue football coach Jeff Brohm has tested positive for the coronavirus, the school announced Sunday.

Brohm is awaiting a second test to confirm the initial result and is isolating at his home, Purdue’s athletic department said in a statement.

He is expected to speak with reporters during his regularly scheduled Zoom call Monday morning.

The Boilermakers are scheduled to host Iowa in their season opener Saturday when the Big Ten Conference begins its virus-delayed, eightgame, conference-only season.

UMass 0-1 and done?: Shai Werts threw three touchdown passes and added a 4-yard touchdown run to help Georgia Southern (3-1) beat Massachusetts 41-0 on Saturday night in Statesboro, Ga. It was the only game on the Minutemen’s schedule, though they could add more if opportunities arise.

Werts was 11-for-16 passing for 128 yards with no interceptions and finished with 13 carries for 76 yards.

UMass was limited to 191 total yards, converted just 2 of 13 third downs with four three-and-outs, and never moved past the Georgia Southern 21-yard line.

UMass announced the cancellation of its 2020 football season Aug. 11 due to concerns surrounding the COVID19 pandemic but later reversed course and on Sept. 21 the school said it would play a limited number of games to be announced as they are scheduled, and Saturday’s game against Georgia Southern is the only one currently on the slate for the Minutemen.

Clemson remains No. 1: Clemson easily held off Alabama to retain the No. 1 spot in The Associated Press college football poll, extending its longest run atop the poll to seven weeks.

The Crimson Tide beat Georgia 41-24 Saturday night to make the case to be No. 1, but it wasn’t enough to topple the Tigers.

Clemson defended its turf with a historic blowout against Georgia Tech. The 73-7 rout was the largest margine of victory ever in an Atlantic Coast Conference football game. Clemson received 54 first-place votes out of 62 from the panel of sports writers and broadcasters.

The Crimson Tide got the remaining eight first-place votes. Notre Dame moved up to a season-high No. 3, Georgia dropped one spot to No. 4 and Ohio State moved up to No. 5 a week before the Big Ten starts playing.

Clemson has been No. 1 since the preseason. The Tigers have been No. 1 23 times in school history but never more than five times in a season before this year.

North Carolina took a big fall, dropping nine spots to No. 14 after losing at Florida State.

Oklahoma State is No. 6, with Texas A&M, Penn State, Cincinnati and Florida rounding out the top 10.
