TheaterWorks Hartford has joined with Hartford Public Library to offer free passes to its timely political comedy “Russian Troll Farm.”

The library has had a free-ticket program with Hartford Stage for years, but this is its first time working with TheaterWorks.

Another first: While the library has produced its own online programming for years, and has stepped up its online offerings during the coronavirus, this is the library’s first involvement with an online theater production.

While their performance space on Pearl Street is shuttered, TheaterWorks moved from a traditional season subscription model to a new membership-based plan where they offer a different show every month. For now, the shows are online. The season began in September with the new Civil Rights musical “At the River I Stand.” “Russian Troll Farm” is the second show in the current season. Next up is playwright

Ayad Akhtar’s “The Who and the What.”

TheaterWorks Hartford and Hartford Public Library intend to continue working together beyond “Russian Troll Farm,” offering tickets to future TheaterWorks shows.

The library’s president/CEO, Bridget Quinn-Carey, said in a statement that “We are so excited to offer TheaterWorks’ productions to our customers. Hartford is a place of immense artistic vitality and as a cultural conduit, Hartford Public Library is in a unique position to help share the city’s good work. We are excited to count TheaterWorks among our offerings.”

“Russian Troll Farm” is a “workplace comedy” set at the Internet Research Agency which created phony accounts and posts designed to sway the 2016 presidential election. Its playwright Sarah Gancher wrote “Seder,” which Hartford Stage staged in 2017.

Live performances of the play are being streamed Oct. 20-24 at 7:30 p.m. One of those performances will be recorded and streamed for the rest of the show’s run, Oct.

25 – Nov. 2. Stream passes for the pre-recorded version are good for 24 hours. Library passes can be checked once the play has opened on Oct. 20.

For more details on the ticket offer, see the “museum passes” page on the Hartford Public Library website, hplct.org. For more information on “Russian Troll Farm,” the

TheaterWorks website is at twhartford.org. For assistance with streaming the program, TheaterWorks can be called at its main box office number 860-527-7838 weekdays between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
