Jones misses practice due to hamstring injury

- By Pat Leonard

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Daniel Jones insisted Wednesday that he’s “feeling good,” but he did not practice with the Giants due to a right hamstring strain.

Backup Colt McCoy took the majority of first-team snaps and remains Sunday’s likely starter at Seattle (8-3). Practice squad quarterback Clayton Th or son took there st.

Veteran Alex Tanney is in the six-day COVID-19 onboarding process as a visiting free agent to stay ready if he’s needed. Jones said he did “treatment and certain exercises” inside the facility during practice and is mixing in plenty of rest.

“Feeling good,” Jones claimed. “It’s healing and recovering. It’s feeling better.

“I certainly want to play and want to be out there. How I recover depends on what I do daytoday.”

Since rest is the best medicine for hamstring strains, the Giants’ plan always has been to rest Jones until later this week to see if he can practice well enough to play Sunday.

Jones has started 13 straight games for the Giants going back to Week 15 of last season. He has a 5-8 record in those starts, but the Giants (4-7) have won three straight.

Giants head coach Joe Judge, meanwhile, made good on his promise to isolate players at various positions to guard against a Denver Broncos-type situation.

The Broncos had to play the Saints on Sunday without a true quarterback due to a positive and three high-risk contacts in their QB room late last week.

Giants wide receiver Alex Bachman, tight end Rysen John, offensive lineman Kenny Wiggins, defensive lineman David Moa, corner Jarren Williams and long snapper Carson Tinker are working on the field separately from the rest of their teammates this week, sources confirmed.

Either Tanney or Thorson could be the quarantined quarterback in the coming weeks once Tanney signs Saturday.

In non-quarterback injury news at Wednesday’ s practice, four other Giants were limited: wide receivers Darius Slayton (shoulder/foot) and Sterling Shepard (toe/shoulder), safety Nate Ebner (knee) and linebacker David Mayo( knee ).

Encouragingly, tight end K ad en Smith, offensive tackle Matt Peart, and wideout Dante Pettis all were full participants one day after coming off the COVID-19 reserve list due to positive tests.
