Maine hands UConn hockey 4th straight loss

AJ Drobot scored twice and Maine rallied from an early deficit with four unanswered goals to lead the Black Bears to a 6-4 Hockey East win over UConn on Friday at Freitas Ice Forumin Storrs.

The Huskies (8-10-2) have now lost four straight games and sit in fifth place in the Hockey East Power Index, used to determine seeding in the upcoming tournament.

Marc G at comb opened the scoring with a short handed goal to give U Con na 1-0 lead at 7:03 of the first period.

Drobot tied the game at 11:53 for Maine (3-9-1), before Hudson Schandor gave UConn the lead back momentaril­y at 18:27. Ben Poisson’s power-play goal just 16 seconds later tied the game and set Maine offonits unanswered run.

Jonny Evans and G at comb added third-period goals for UConn. Tomas Vomacka had 13 saves for the Huskies. Victor Ostmanhad4­0 of Maine’s 48 saves, with Matthew T hi es sen stopping eight more.

The two teams play again on Saturday at 4p.m. in Storrs.

Qu in nip i ac 4, St. Lawrence 2: At Canton, N.Y., Ethan de Jong and Ty Smilancic each scored powerplay goals to lead the 12th-ranked Bobcats to the ECACwin.

Michael Lombardi and Desi Burg art also scored for Quinnipiac (15-5-4,8-3-4), while Keith Petruzzell­i made 17 saves.

Men’s basketball

Central Connecticu­t State 83, Wagner 77: At New Britain, Stephane Ayang ma had a careerhigh 20 points as Central Connecticu­t closed out its season with the Northeast Conference win.

Zach Newkirk had 19 points for

Central Connecticu­t (5-16, 5-13 NEC), which snapped its six-game losing streak. Ian Krishnan added 16 points and Karrington Wallace had three blocks.

Alex Morales scored a careerhigh 29 points and had nine rebounds for the Seahawks (11-6, 11-5), whose 10-game winning streak was snapped. Elijah Ford added 13 points and nine rebounds, and DeLonnie Hunthad11 points.

The Blue Devils evened the season series against the Sea hawks. Wagner defeated Central Connecticu­t 83-63 on Thursday.

Keene State 80, Eastern Connecticu­t State 79: At Keene, N.H., Tyreice Woods’ 3-point attempt as time ran out was no good and the Warriors lost a Little East Conference semifinal game.

Woods led E CS U with 21 points, Quinton Lott added 15 points and 10 rebounds and Cory Muckle 14 points and nine rebounds. Eastern concludes its season at 5-4 and 3-3.

Women’s basketball

Quinnipiac 71, Niagara 57: At Niagara, Mackenzie DeWees had a game-high 21 points and Mikala Morris added 10 points and 23 rebounds to lead the Bob cats to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference win.

Sajada Bonner added 11 points and rose Caverly 10 as Quinnipiac improved to 13-6 and 11-4.

Baseball

Southern Miss 6, UConn 5: At Hattiesbur­g, Miss., the Golden Eagles scored twice in the eighth and defeated the Huskies in a nonconfere­nce game. Andy Haugue, Chris Winkel and Christian Fedko each had two hits for UConn (1-3). Kenneth Haus took the loss in relief for the Huskies.
