Kondelik helps lead UConn past Providence in regular-season finale

Jachym Kondelik scored three goals and Jonny Evans had a goal and three assists as UConn ended the regular season with a key 5-3 win over No. 15 Providence 5-3 in a Hockey East game on Friday in Storrs.

UConn jumped on the Friars with four goals in last 10 minutes of the opening period. By the time Providence got on the board in the third, the Huskies had built a 5-0 lead.

The win allowed UConn (10-10-2) to hold off the Friars and lock up the No. 4 seed in the upcoming conference tournament. Providence will be the fifths eed.

K on deli ks tar ted the scoring at 10:16 of the opening period, then added his second goal just 1:42 later. Hudson Schandor upped the lead to 3-0 at 14:39, before Kondelik got his third at 17:05. All three of K on deli k’ s goals were on the power play.

UConn has earned a bye into the quarterfin­al round of the tournament — played on March 14— against an opponent to be determined.

Women’ s basketball

St. Francis, Pa., 69, Central Connecticu­t State 62: At New Britain, Forever

Toppin had a game-high 21 points and added seven rebounds and five assists in the Blue Devils’ season-ending loss. Dejah Jenkins added 11 points for Central (4-14, 4-14 in the Northeast Conference). Karson Swogger and Lili Benzel each had 18 points for St. Francis.

Men’s basketball

St. Peter’s 66, Quinnipiac 64: At Hamden, Luis Kortnight scored a game-high 18 points as the Bobcats closed out their regular-season.

Baseball

UConn 5, Miami, Ohio, 0: At Conway, S.C., transfer Ben Casparius picked up his first win as a Husky, pitching eight innings, allowing three hits and striking out 11. Christian Fedko had two hits and two runs scored for UConn (3-4). Zach Bushling, Pat Winkel, Chris Winkel and Reggie Crawford drove in runs for the Huskies.

UConn recruiting news: Danny Antolovich, a 6-foot-7, 300-pound offensive lineman from Switzerlan­d has signed a letter of intent with the Huskies, coach Randy Eds all announced.
