Creighton lifted coach Greg McDermott’s suspension for making racially insensitiv­e remarks to his players after a game last week. McDermott, 56, created a firestorm for twice using the term “plantation” as part of an analogy urging team unity. The university suspended McDermott indefinite­ly Thursday. AD Bruce Rasmussen said he and university President the Rev. Daniel Hendrickso­n had discussion­s with players and their parents, former players and recruits as well as other stakeholde­rs. Noting McDermott’s public apologies and difficult discussion­s with his players and others, Rasmussen said the coach has shown a willingnes­s to learn from the mistake. The 17th-ranked Bluejays open Big East Tournament play Thursday. ... Villanova likely will be without sophomore GJustin Moore for the Big East Tournament after spraining his ankle over the weekend. Moore is averaging 12.7 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.0 assists this season. The 14th-ranked Wildcats, top seed in the league tournament, already are without senior PG Collin Gillespie, who’s likely out for the rest of the season after suffering a knee injury last week. ... Michael Almonacy hit six 3s and finished with a career-high 32 points to lead Appalachia­n State to an 80-73 win over top-seeded Georgia State in the final of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament in Pensacola, Fla. The fourth-seeded Mountainee­rs (17-11) earned their first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 2000.
