Fedex Ground, a package shipping subsidiary of the Fedex Corp., is hiring in response to surging online purchasing and seven-day home delivery.

Fedex Ground said Wednesday it plans to hire more than 1,250 workers at numerous sites in Hartford.

It’s part of a drive by Fedex to hire 80,000 workers nationally.

Open positions are available for a mix of part- and full-time package handlers as Fedex Ground continues to expand capacity. More information about jobs and how to apply are available at fedexgroundjobs.com.

Fedex Ground announced in May it was hiring 600 workers, primarily package handlers.

The hiring binge is taking place at Fedex locations around the country as the package handler hires thousands of part and full time workers in Atlanta, Minneapolis, Indiana, Pennsylvania, and other locations.

Online purchases boomed during the pandemic as brick-andmortar retail outlets were closed to slow the spread of COVID-19. Fedex Corp. reported revenue in 2021 of $84 billion, up 21% from last year.

Amazon is offering $1,000 sign-on bonuses for warehouse and other jobs in some cities.

In Connecticut, the trade, transportation and utilities sector, which includes warehousing, has regained about 97% of the jobs lost in the pandemic, approaching the PRE-COVID-19 employment of December 2019.

The sector added 46,500 jobs, a 19.5% increase since April 2020, the lowest point in the state’s labor force after 294,000 jobs were cut by employers shut by the state at the start of the public health crisis.

Overall, Connecticut’s labor force has regained about 94% of lost jobs, approaching the pre-pandemic high in November 2019.
