How does Bouknight fit with the teams to which he’s linked?

- By Shawn Mcfarland

James Bouknight’s freshman year at Uconn showed he had the potential to play in the NBA. His impressive sophomore year proved he could be a first-round pick.

Ensuing pre-draft workouts with teams and at the NBA combine moved him into lottery and top-10 discussion.

The only question left to answer is where, exactly, will

Bouknight land on Thursday night?

He told reporters Monday that he has worked out with the Oklahoma City, Charlotte, Golden State, Orlando and New Orleans. The Pelicans, however, made a deal with Memphis that likely eliminates them from the Bouknight sweepstakes.

Here’s how Bouknight fits ahead of Thursday’s draft.

The Huskies had six players — Bouknight included — that scored in that seven-to-15 point range a year ago. R.J. Cole (12.2 points), Tyrese Martin (10.3), Isaiah Whaley (8), Tyler Polley (7.5) and Adama Sanogo (7.3) lead among returners. Junior Jalen Gaffney, who averaged 6.1 points, proved he’s capable of hitting double digits, and sophomore Andre Jackson, who’s already drawn rave reviews through six weeks of summer practice, figures to be in that mix. Hurley believes he has a couple of guys that can make the jump from 12 a game to 14 or 15.

It becomes trickier to predict after that. Freshman Jordan Hawkins, ESPN’S 57th ranked player in the class of 2021, has drawn Bouknight comparisons. Four-star forward Samson Johnson shot up recruiting lists this past winter and came to Storrs as Uconn’s top-ranked freshman. Redshirt junior Akok Akok averaged 5.8 points in 25 games as a freshman. After rehabbing a torn Achilles tendon he said he feels “amazing” and wants to prove he’s one of the country’s top two-way players.
