Elizabeth (Hovhanessi­an) Kalagian, 99, of Newington, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 30, 2021. Born February 17, 1922, and raised in New Britain, Elizabeth, known as "Lizzie" or "Betty" was the oldest of five children to the late Hagop “Jacob” and Osanna (Manoogian) Hovhanessi­an. Elizabeth attended New Britain Schools, graduating from New Britain High School. Elizabeth’s happiest times were those living in Indian Orchard, MA with the love of her life Eddie Kalagian. Following Eddie’s death, Elizabeth moved back to New Britain where she worked for the State until her retirement. She made many lifelong friends there. Together this group of friends would travel the world and attend the theater regularly. Elizabeth’s passions in life were travel and the arts. She also developed a keen interest in the stock market over the years. There were many a family gatherings she would share her stock tips! She was a long time member of the Armenian Church of the Holy Resurrecti­on. Elizabeth will be deeply missed by all who knew her. She will be forever remembered for her grace and class in which she lived her life. She leaves behind several nieces and nephews; a niece Sharon Sherwood who lovingly cared for her since 2013; and her sister Sarah Sansone of Plainville; In addition to her husband and parents, Elizabeth was predecease­d by three siblings, her brother Bagdassar “Baggy” Hovhanessi­an and sisters, Eleanor Conochalla and Ann Grano. Funeral services will be held at the Armenian Church of the Holy Resurrecti­on on Friday, August 13 at 9 am. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in Springfiel­d, Massachuse­tts. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Armenian Church of the Holy Resurrecti­on, 1910 Stanley Street, New Britain, CT 06053. Erickson-hansen Funeral Home, New Britain, is in charge of arrangemen­ts.
