Yankees: Four-time All-star RHP Gerrit Cole has recovered from COVID19 and will start Monday as the Yankees host the Angels in a makeup of a game postponed on July 1. Cole is 10-6 with a 3.11 ERA in 21 starts. The 30-year-old Yankees ace was placed on the COVID list after testing positive on Aug. 3. Four days earlier, he allowed eight runs in 5 innings in a road loss to the Rays. Cole said Sunday that his symptoms were “mild.” “I am feeling good. Ready to go and very much looking forward to it,” he added. “I don’t think we’ll push the limits by any means because the recovery will be very important.” The Yankees still have four players on the COVID list: 1B Anthony Rizzo, C Gary Sánchez, starter Jordan Montgomery and reliever Clay Holmes . ... Rougned Odor hit a two-run HR, Nestor Cortes pitched six solid innings and the Yankees beat the host White Sox 5-3. Luke Voit also hit a two-run HR in the ninth for the Yankees, who went 5-1 in the season series against the AL Central leaders. Cortes (1-1) allowed one run and seven hits in his first win since Aug. 2019. The White Sox have lost four of five.
Indians: Triston Mckenzie retired the first 23 Tigers batters in order before Harold Castro lined a single to right with two out in the eighth and the Indians cruised to an 11-0 road victory. The 24-yearold stunned the Comerica Park crowd of 25,684 hoping to see Miguel Cabrera’s 500th HR. Instead, they gave Mckenzie a standing ovation after Castro’s hit and another after he finished the inning with his 11th strikeout. Mckenzie (2-5) came within four outs of breaking baseball’s longest no-hit drought. The Indians haven’t had one since Len Barker’s perfect game on May 15, 1981, against the Blue Jays. The Indians took control of the game with a six-run second.
Fernando Tatis Jr. homered twice and drove in four runs in his return from the IL, and the Padres beat the host Diamondbacks 8-2. The 22-year-old Tatis had four hits, helping the Padres snap a four-game losing streak. Playing right field for the first time in his professional career and batting leadoff, Tatis posted his fifth multihomer game this season and No. 8 for his career.
Red Sox: Eduardo Rodriguez was sharp against the Orioles again, J.D. Martinez hit a threerun HR and the host Red Sox completed a three-game sweep with a 6-2 victory. It was the Orioles’ 11th straight loss. The Red Sox have won four of five after losing 10 of 12 and falling out of first in the AL East. The Orioles’ Cedric Mullins went 0-for5, halting his 20-game hitting streak. Rodriguez (9-6) allowed a first-inning unearned run and three singles, striking out six and walking three in six innings. In his last 12 appearances against the Orioles, he’s 9-0 with a 1.81 ERA.
Cardinals: Nolan Arenado homered for the third straight game, Tyler O’neill hit one right after him and the visiting Cardinals completed an in-state sweep of the Royals 7-2. The Cards won their sixth straight, while the Royals lost for the fourth time in a row. In the second, Arenado and O’neill hit back-to-back HRS for the second time in three games. J.A. Happ (7-6) went 5 innings and allowed no runs, five hits, two walks and struck out two.
Braves: Dansby Swanson homered for the third straight game, and the Braves beat the Nationals 6-5. The Braves have won a franchise-best eight straight games in Washington and 10 of 12 overall. They pulled a game ahead of the Philloes for the NL East lead. The Nats have lost a season-high seven straight.
