Tarwood, Muriel (Murray)

-

With sad hearts her family announces the passing of Muriel Elva Murray Tarwood on Tuesday, August 17, 2021. She was 99 years old, nine months short of her 100th birthday. Muriel was born in Hartford, May 18, 1922, seventh child of William Murray and Florence (Ryan) Murray. She survived all of her siblings: William and

Robert Murray, Florence Torpey, Hazel Bagley, Ethelyn Pfau, Mae Seymour Reed, and Alyce Canapari. She was predeceased by her husband, Elmer "Bill" Tarwood and her beloved son, Kenneth Robert Tarwood.

She leaves to cherish her memory two daughters, Elaine Moffa (husband, Fred) of Windsor and Marilyn Johnston (husband, Ray) of Bloomfield, daughter-in-law,

Diane Tarwood of East Hartford, four grandchildren, Pamela Moffa, Dr. Fred Moffa (wife, Jennifer), Kenneth Tarwood, Jr. (wife, Emily), Ryan Tarwood, and five greatgrandchildren, Jamie, Fred, Kelly-anne, Riley and Rory. Muriel was also a beloved aunt, great-aunt, neighbor, and friend to many whom she inspired, including devoted nieces, Marjorie Weidlich, Lyn Magrath Grant, Flo Kovensky, friends, Ellis Paulman and Phyllis Reed, and cousin Ray Ryan (wife, Miriam). We thank all family and friends who came to comfort her in her final days. Muriel was a proud graduate of Glastonbury High School Class of 1940, enjoying and organizing many class reunions (up to the 70th). She married her “one and only true love" Bill, an Army serviceman whom she met on leave from Bradley Field, in 1944. Muriel was a self-defined and fervent home-maker and mother (even while working outside the home) over the course of their 58 years together, primarily in East Hartford and Glastonbury. For nearly twenty-five years, she worked for The Travelers, rising to Supervisor, Group Pension accounting, retiring in 1983. Muriel was the caregiver to her parents and also to many of her siblings and enjoyed the role of matriarch, hostess, and archivist for

her large Irish clan as the years passed. She embodied the values of self-reliance, perseverance, and compassion formed from her Glastonbury farm upbringing, the Depression, and World War II. She was a patriotic and informed citizen, a lover of beauty and flowers, and a selfless giver to family, friends, coworkers. and all who knew her. Her example made better people of us all. She is now in the arms of the angels; may she find comfort there. Her legacy will shine on.

Services will be held, TODAY, at Farley-sullivan Funeral Home, 50 Naubuc Ave., Glastonbury on Saturday, August 21.
