O’ward moves to top of Indycar standings

The Indycar championsh­ip flipped leaders Saturday night when Alex Palou was collected in an early three-car accident that moved Pato O’ward to the top of the season standings after a runner-up finish to Josef Newgarden at World Wide Technology Raceway in Madison, Illinois.

Newgarden won for the second time this season and beat O’ward by 0.5397 seconds.

The 22-year-old O’ward claimed the points lead for the second time this season. He was 52 points behind Palou two races ago, but Palou’s engine failure last week sliced it to 21 headed into Saturday.

NFL: Titans coach Mike Vrabel announced that he has tested positive for COVID-19. Vrabel said he will get retested Monday. He’s currently in quarantine and following protocols . ... Colts QB Carson Wentz, G Quenton Nelson and C Ryan Kelly will practice on a limited basis this week, coach Frank Reich announced. Wentz and Nelson had the same foot surgery earlier this month. Kelly has been out with a left elbow injury since July 30 . ... Falcons QB AJ Mccarron, backup to starter Matt Ryan, will miss the season after tearing the ACL in his right knee during Saturday’s preseason game against the Dolphins, ESPN reported.

Soccer: Bayern Munich set a European scoring record as it beat Cologne 3-2 for its first league win under new coach Julian Nagelsmann. Serge Gnabry scored twice and Robert Lewandowsk­i got the other goal to ensure Bayern became the only team among Europe’s top five leagues to have scored in 74 consecutiv­e games in all competitio­ns. That run started after a 0-0 draw with Leipzig in February 2020.

Tennis: Top-ranked Ash Barty won her fifth title of the season, taking eight of the last nine games from wild card Jil Teichmann for a 6-3, 6-1 victory at the Western & Southern Open in Mason, Ohio. Olympic gold medalist Alexander Zverev beat Andrey Rublev 6-2, 6-3 in the men’s final.
