Rahm, Mcilroy, Burns share lead at BMW

World No. 1 and U.S. Open winner Jon Rahm, two-time Fedex Cup champ Rory Mcilroy and Sam Burns each shot an opening-round 8-under 64 to take a one-shot lead at the BMW Championsh­ip.

The tournament outside of Baltimore is the PGA Tour’s second of three playoff events. Tony Finau won the opener.

Eighteen players shot 67 or lower at Caves Valley on Thursday. That group included former Masters champ Sergio Garcia (65), Patrick Cantlay (66) and Finau, Xander Schauffele and reigning Cup champ Dustin Johnson (67).

College basketball: Memphis coach Penny Hardaway added 16-year NBA veteran Rasheed Wallace, 46, as an assistant. The announceme­nt comes a day after five-star G Emoni Bates announced his commitment to Memphis for next season.

College football: LSU and USC will open the 2024 season in Las Vegas, a matchup of teams that both staked claim to the 2003 national championsh­ip. The Tigers and Trojans will play in the Vegas Kickoff Classic during Labor Day weekend in 2024 at Allegiant Stadium in a game to be aired on ABC or ESPN.

NFL: Giants RB Saquon Barkley took the next step in his return from a torn ACL in his right knee when he participat­ed in live drills during Thursday’s joint practices with the Patriots. His status for the Giants’ season opener Sept. 12 against the Broncos remains unclear.

NHL: The Flyers signed center Sean Couturier to an eight-year, $62 million extension . ... The Hurricanes and right wing Andrei Svechnikov, 21, agreed to an eight-year, $62 million contract.

Soccer: Real Madrid submitted a second, improved offer of $212 million to Paris Saint-germain for 22-year-old forward Kylian Mbappe, ESPN reported. An initial $188 million bid was rejected Tuesday.
