Dechambeau narrowly misses a 59 at BMW

-

Bryson Dechambeau missed shooting a 59 by inches.

He might not be the last person to threaten the milestone in these conditions at Caves Valley.

Dechambeau’s 12-under 60 stood out, but it was another day of low scores in general at the BMW Championship on Friday. It also was the second straight week a player shot 60 during the Fedex Cup playoffs. Cameron Smith missed a 12-foot putt for a 59 last weekend at Liberty National.

Dechambeau leads in Owings Mills at 16 under, but he was just a shot ahead of Patrick Cantlay, who shot a 63 on Friday.

“I thought I played great — 9 under, I’m very pleased,” Cantlay said. “But obviously there was lower than that out there today.”

Jon Rahm also was a stroke behind Dechambeau. He played 15 holes before play was halted for darkness. At that point, only six of the 69 players in the field were over par for the tournament.

College basketball: The University of Louisville said Friday that it is suspending head men’s basketball coach Chris Mack for six games for failing to follow procedures in handling an extortion attempt by one of his assistants. Mack “failed to follow university guidelines, policies, and procedures in handling the matter,” Louisville AD Vince Tyra said.

NFL: Saints canceled their home preseason game set for Saturday against the Cardinals because of the potential for Hurricane Ida to hit Louisiana’s coast with wind as high as 140 mph Sunday. After moving kickoff up seven hours, the Saints announced the decision Friday night to cancel the game came after consultation with city officials in New Orleans, Gov. John Bel Edwards, the National Weather Service, The Department of Homeland Security and the NFL. Ida struck Cuba on Friday showing hallmarks of a rapidly intensifying storm that could slam into Louisiana as a Category 4 hurricane on Sunday
