Millard H. Mason “Mill”, 95, of Wethersfie­ld, beloved husband of the late Lorraine (Hansen) Mason, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 8, 2021 at Hartford Hospital. Born in East Hartford on June 21, 1926, he was the son of the late Louis T. and Ruby (Matthews) Mason. He moved to Wethersfie­ld at a young age and graduated

from Wethersfie­ld High School in the class of 1945, the “End of the War” Class. Millard was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving during WWII as a crewman on the then-new P-61 Black Widow night fighter plane. He graduated with a Bachelor's Degree from Springfiel­d College in 1952, where he played baseball and soccer and served as Captain in his senior year. He also earned a Master's

Degree from the University of Hartford and a Sixth-year Post-master's Degree from Springfiel­d College.

Mr. Mason returned to Wethersfie­ld High School, where he taught physical education for 33 years and was the school's first Athletic Director. He retired in 1986 and immediatel­y became the Executive Secretary of the newly-establishe­d, 24-team Central Connecticu­t Conference (CCC). He held that position for the next 14 years, when he retired again to play golf. A man of strong faith, Millard was a member of the First Church of Christ in Wethersfie­ld since 1944.

Millard is survived by three sons, Michael Mason and his wife Susan of Ellicott City, MD, Mark Mason and his wife Suzanne of Egg Harbor, NJ and Dr. Robert Mason, PH.D. and his wife Sarah of Corvallis, OR; his daughter, Christine Mason-giardini of Annapolis, MD; his brother, Howard Mason of Maine, NY; his sister, Beverly Plucker of Fairfield; his daughter-in-law, Anna Marie Mason of Bethpage, NY; ten grandchild­ren, seven great-grandchild­ren and a longtime companion, Marcia Griswold of Wethersfie­ld. Besides his wife, he was predecease­d by his son, James Mason, PH.D. and his brothers, Raymond, Glenn, Roy and Warren.

In light of the current pandemic, a private burial with military honors will take place at Rose Hill Memorial Park and a private memorial service will be held at the First Church of Christ in Wethersfie­ld with Pastor Deryk Richenburg officiatin­g. There are no calling hours. Arrangemen­ts have been entrusted to the D'esopo Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Blvd., Wethersfie­ld.
