Osit, Stephen

-

Stephen Osit, CPA, age 84, of West Hartford passed away peacefully on December 4, 2022 surrounded by his loving family. He was the son of the late Henry and Mary (Rachleff) Osit. Steve was born in Brooklyn, NY, and at the age of 2, he moved with his family to Hartford where he made life-long friends. He was a 1956 graduate of Weaver High School, a 1960 graduate of the University of Connecticut with a degree in Accounting and spent 6 years in the Connecticut Air National Guard Reserves. After graduation, Steve went to work in finance for the NY Central Railroad “just to pass the time away”. While living in NY, he met and became engaged to the love of his life Rita (Lowell). They married in 1962 and spent most of their married life in West Hartford where Steve began working as a Certified Public Accountant. In 1980, together with Stuart Kaufman and Bob Gurne, Steve co-founded the accounting firm of Gurne, Kaufman & Osit, PC where he continued to practice until retiring in 2007. After retirement, Steve and Rita enjoyed winters in Florida, attending auctions, and visiting friends. Steve was known for his big heart and willingness to lend a helping hand to family and friends (including their children). His assistance was always

done quietly and without expectations. He frequently could be found at his grandchildren’s sporting events, often showing up unannounced just as the game was about to start. Steve enjoyed winters in Florida, watching Uconn Women’s basketball, attending auctions, and was an avid reader. Steve joins his wife of 60 years in heaven, Rita (Lowell) Osit, who predeceased him by one week. He is survived by his children Alan Osit (Sally) and Carla Burns (Michael) and his grandchildren, Tyler Osit, Lindsey Osit and Emily Osit. He was predeceased by his grandson Jacob Osit, who will be reunited with Steve and Rita in heaven. A special thank you with love to Deb Cohen and Christine Smith who Steve referred to as “adopted daughters”. His caregivers Marcia Elder and Lezline Gayle who showed him so much kindness. His doctors and nurses who politely laughed at all of his jokes, especially Dr. Richard Abraham who Steve felt was the most dedicated doctor in the world. A graveside funeral service for Stephen and Rita will be held on Friday December 9th at 11:00 AM at the Hartford Mutual Society Memorial Park, 74 Wolcott Road, East Granby. In lieu of flowers, donations in Steve’s memory can be sent to an organization that honors the memory of his grandson, Golf Fore the Kids, 35 Farm Brook Ln., South Windsor, CT 06074. Steve will be forever in our hearts. Funeral arrangements provided by Hebrew Funeral Association, West Hartford.
