Joel Patrick (“JP”, “Joe”) Cyr, 79, of East Berlin, beloved husband of Penny Marie Cyr, died on Dec. 31, 2022. JP and Penny met in high school and were married for 54 years. JP is also survived by his daughter, Giselle Cyr, and her husband, Mark, of Kensington; and his son, Roy Cyr of East Berlin. He also leaves two grandchild­ren, Nicole Cyr and Ryan Cyr of Kensington; a sister, Dorothy Bouchard, and her husband, Roger, of Canada; two sisters-in-law, Lillian Whalen of Portland and Rose Faselle of Cromwell, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Born on March 17, 1943, JP was raised in Fort Kent, Maine and graduated from Fort Kent High School. He was a highly decorated veteran of the Vietnam War, serving with the First Air Cavalry Division in 1965-1966. Among the awards he received for heroism in combat were the Bronze Star, two Purple Heart Medals, and the Air Medal. JP was also a proud member of the Connecticu­t Chapter of Disabled American Veterans. Following his military service, JP relocated with Penny to Connecticu­t where they raised their family, first in New Britain and then in East Berlin. He was employed for many years as a machinist with Fafnir Bearing and Alinabal, Inc. JP enjoyed socializin­g with his many friends at the St. Jean Baptiste Club and the French Model in New Britain. An avid fisherman and card player, he also enjoyed gardening with Penny, visits to Connecticu­t's casinos, and time spent surrounded by his loving family. Calling hours for JP will be on Saturday, January 14th at the Berlin Memorial Funeral Home, 96 Main Street in Kensington, from 9:30-11 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Sacred Heart Church, 48 Cottage Street, in East Berlin at 11:30 a.m. Burial with full military honors will be at the Wilcox Cemetery in East Berlin. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that a donation in memory of Joel Cyr be made to the Disabled American Veterans Department of Connecticu­t, 80 Hall Ave. Ste 801, Meriden, CT 06450.
