Huskies to resume play after postponement

- By Lila Bromberg Hartford Courant

Uconn women’s basketball will play at St. John’s on Wednesday as scheduled after postponing last game, the program announced Monday.

The No. 4 Huskies will have at least seven players available to meet the minimum amount required by the Big East, but the team did not specify who will be back in action.

Uconn postponed a home game against Depaul scheduled for last Sunday due to only having six players available after both Aaliyah

Edwards and Ayanna Patterson were injured in last Thursday’s game at Xavier.

Along with Edwards (ankle) and Patterson (undisclosed), Caroline Ducharme (concussion) and Azzi Fudd (right knee) have also been out for the Huskies. Paige Bueckers (ACL tear) and Ice Brady (Patella tear) suffered season-ending injuries in the months leading up to the season and remain out as well.

The six healthy players on the team include Nika Mühl, Dorka

Juhász, Lou Lopez Sénéchal, Aubrey Griffin, Inês Bettencourt and Amari Deberry.

In order for Wednesday’s game to go on as scheduled, at least one of Edwards, Patterson, Ducharme and Fudd had to become available. Uconn has not confirmed which one yet.

After having Saturday off, the Huskies had practice on Sunday. The program has yet to release specific details on the nature of Edwards and Patterson’s injuries.

Fudd has missed the last eight games after injuring her right knee in Uconn’s game at Notre Dame on Dec. 4. She was cleared to return to basketball activities at the end of December and has participated in team warmups for the last three games as part of her rehab process. Ducharme suffered a concussion in practice on Jan. 2 and she’ll need to clear concussion protocol in order to return.

While the Huskies will have at least seven players available to resume play, they remain without head coach Geno Auriemma, who is taking time away from the team to focus on his health. Associate head coach Chris Dailey remains the Huskies’ leader on the sidelines as acting head coach. She is 17-0 when filling in for Auriemma, including leading Uconn to four wins this season.
