Eileen T. (Halpin) Spurgas, 92, of New Britain, passed away on January 31, 2023. She was the beloved wife of the late Raymond Spurgas. Eileen was born in Moosup, on June 30, 1930, daughter of the late John and Diana (Robitaille) Halpin.

Eileen was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and sister. She is survived by her daughters Kathleen Sones and her husband Sheldon of Newington, Beth Chamis and her husband Robert of Portland, CT; and son Raymond Spurgas, Jr. of Burlington, CT. She was affectionately known as “Grammie” to her grandchildren, Morgan (Kevin) Ferrarotti, Taylor (Sam) Laudati, Nicholas (Shaun) Spurgas, and David Sones; as well as great grandchildren Samantha and Addison Ferrarotti, Alex and Aiden Sones, and baby boy Spurgas due in May. In addition to her husband of 68 years, Eileen was predeceased by her son John Spurgas, and brother Richard Halpin.

A graduate of the Saint Francis School of Nursing, class of 1951, where she made special friends, some of whom traveled to many countries with her and her husband over the years. She applied her warmth and compassion in positions she held both at then New Britain General Hospital and Brittany Farms Convalescent Home and volunteered at the Hospital for Special Care in New Britain. Her gentle manner coupled with her nursing skills brought comfort to all whom she touched. Her four children were benefactors of her wise guidance, work ethic, and ability to navigate through life's challenges, head held high.

Eileen, sometimes called “Alice” by Ray, had a wide circle of friends -too many to list- but was like a sister to her special friend, the late Eileen Hogan.

Her mother, widowed at a young age, inspired her. She learned that a mother could raise children, work full time, be a full time care provider to her aging mother, a devoted wife, and have a kind heart. Thus leaving us all with a legacy that we will cherish and emulate. We will miss you. We will honor you. We will think not so much of this tearful day but of the happy days which gave us a springboard to follow in our own lives. We are sad but, at the same time, grateful to have had you as a guiding light all these wonderful years.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution in Eileen's honor to Hospital for Special Care, 2150 Corbin Ave., New Britain, CT 06053 or Interval House, Attn: Amanda Delaura, PO box 340207, Hartford, CT 06134.
