In Loving Memory Of

- JOHN R. NASTO

You had one rule with me for hockey: whether it was a game, practice or shinny in the backyard, you go all in with 100% effort all the time. To do anything less is a waste of your gifts.

So when I awoke at 4:30 am on a Sunday morning in late January of ‘75 sick as can be and a Nor'easter raging outside, I knew if I got out of bed for the game against Winthrop (Mass.) in East Boston, the above rule would be in play. Determined to play as expected, I got dressed and headed to the kitchen. You came downstairs while I was eating breakfast and smiled (you were always in a good mood) and asked me if I was ready. I nodded yes, and you got the Chrysler Newport ready and I packed my bag and threw it in the trunk with my sticks, and we headed into the teeth of the Nor'easter for the game. You played the radio softly so I could sleep.

The Winthrop boys were ready for us and we were behind at the end of the first period. Coach Morrone blasted us for our poor play, but pointed out that while I was very sick I was outplaying everyone else on the team. With this message delivered and another clipboard sacrificed in doing so, we came back to take the lead and beat the Winthrop boys. After the game you found me in the lobby and said the words that mattered most that day and still matter today: “Great game, excellent effort. Let's get you home.”

I am forever grateful for the time that you took that day and all the other days we spent together so I could chase my hockey dreams. I could not have accomplished all I did as a player without your love and support. Happy to have shared that journey with you. Miss you and Mom. With strength and honor I carry on and continue to give 100% in hockey and everything else I do.
