Malcolm Kallock Chadbourne, age 94, of Suffield by the River in Suffield, CT died on February 10, 2023. Born at home in Limerick, Maine, on June 12, 1928, Malcolm was the son of Daniel Ford and Clara (Kallock) Chadbourne. He was the husband of the late Joanne Eva (Dixon) Chadbourne who died in 2017. Malcolm is survived by his son Mark Chadbourne (Brookline, MA); a daughter Karen Korby and her husband Michael (West Suffield, CT), a daughter Sara Moriarty and her husband Tom (Enfield, CT); a daughter Jane Chadbourne and her fiancé Dave Davenport (East Windsor, CT), and a daughter Susan Chadbourne (Enfield, CT) and her partner Jay Oswell (Somers, CT). Malcolm is also survived by eight grandchild­ren, Stash Pawlowski and his wife Jamie (Norwood, MA), Thomas Moriarty and his wife Heather (Franklin Square, NY), Emily Dyess and her husband Derrick (Diamondhea­d, MS), Laura Moriarty (Enfield, CT), Paul Merker (East Windsor, CT), Kevin Merker and his fiancé Courtney Blewett (Warwick, RI), and Nathanael and Andrew Chadbourne (Brookline, Ma).additional­ly, Malcolm is survived by six great grandchild­ren – Eibhlin, Thomas, Natalie, Matthew, Colton, and Cheyenne. Malcolm is also survived by his sister-in-law Martha Smith and her husband Peter, and several nieces and nephews. Malcolm was one of 8 graduates of Limerick High School in 1946. He then enrolled at the University of Maine, graduating in 1951; he was the first person in his immediate family to attend college. Upon graduation, Malcolm was drafted into the US Army where he attended the Officer Candidate School and served in the Finance Corp of the active as well as the Reserve Army. He retired after 22 years of military service as a Lieutenant Colonel. In the early 1950s Malcolm and his young family moved to Belmont, MA where he worked as a public-school teacher before joining the John Hancock Company as a life and health insurance underwrite­r. Malcolm subsequent­ly joined the Hartford Life Insurance Company as an underwrite­r and was transferre­d to the Hartford, CT office in 1967,moving the family to Somers, CT where they lived for the next 45 years. Malcolm accepted early retirement from The Hartford after working for them for 25 years and retired as an Assistant Secretary in 1985. Subsequent­ly, he worked in life underwriti­ng with the Monarch Life and Massmutual companies with final retirement from underwriti­ng in 1993. In 2013 Malcolm and Joanne moved to Suffield by the River where he soon became a beloved and respected elder in the community. Malcolm had a lifelong interest in theater and was instrument­al in the founding of the Somers Village Players in 1971. He remained extremely active with the Somers Village Players for many years, producing, directing, and acting in many of their theater production­s. Malcolm served as the local theater reviewer for the Journal Inquirer in the early 1980s. Additional­ly, Malcolm served as a volunteer at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Stafford, CT as well as Literacy Volunteers and Reading for the Blind. Malcolm was an avid gardener and maintained nine gardens at his home on Lindell Drive in Somers. He was a member of the Somers Historical Society and he and his wife Joanne edited the society's newsletter. Malcolm also served on the Somers Education Committee Board and the Somers Library Board. Malcolm was a member of the Somers Congregati­onal Church where he served on numerous committees including the Caring Committee, taught Sunday School, served as Treasurer for several years and helped to organize and develop the church's Memorial Garden. In the last five years of his life, Malcolm was inspired to write and publish four novels: Greta and Caps: Unlikely Friends, Harold, Rich's Ride, and Gramps and the Boy. Calling hours will be at the Somers Funeral Home, 354 Main Street, Somers CT, on Sunday, February 26 from 3:30 – 6:30 pm. and the funeral service will be at the Somers Congregati­onal Church, 599 Main Street, Somers CT, on Monday, February 27 at 10:30 am.
