Top prospect Dominguez to get a look in spring opener

- By James O’connell

The Yankees will get their first in-game look of the spring at their No. 2 prospect — according to MLB Pipeline — on Saturday against the Phillies at Baycare Park. Jasson Dominguez will be making the trip to Clearwater for New York’s spring opener.

The 20-year-old is among the non-roster invitees at camp and appears to be the first of their top prospects to get the call.

“Excited [to see Dominguez against top competition],” said manager Aaron Boone Thursday at George M Steinbrenner Field in Tampa. “Every step of the way, when he graduated levels last year and across three different levels, improved in every aspect. Kind of got better as the competition got better. Another guy that’s had a really good winter and he looks really good so far this spring. Looking forward to seeing him in some action.”

Dominguez began last season at Low-a Tampa and ended the season with Double-a Somerset where he dominated the competition in their postseason. “The Martian” hit .450/.560/.950 with three homers and 10 RBI in five games including a 3-4 performance with homers from both sides of the plate in the championship game.

On the whole, the Dominican native slashed .273/.376/.461 with 16 homers and 59 RBI in 120 games between Low-a, High-a and Double-a.

Oswaldo Cabrera, Gleyber Torres and Isiah Kinerfalefa will also be making the trip as Boone said that he will not be unleashing all of his “starters” on Saturday with a split-squad situation the following day. The Yanks will have their home spring opener against the Braves on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. and another squad against the Blue Jays at TD Ballpark in Dunedin, Fla.
