Villanova avoids upset bid, wins in Big East quarterfin­al

Maddy Siegrist posted a double-double and Lucy Oisen scored 19 and her go-ahead free throw with .7 seconds left sent 11th-ranked Villanova past Depaul 71-70 on Saturday in a Big East quarterfin­al matchup at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville.

Siegrist scored 26 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, Christina Dalce scored 12 and Maddie Burke 10 for Villanova.

Aneesah Morrow scored 24 points and had 17 rebounds, Kendall Holmes scored 20 points shooting 5 of 9 from 3-point range and Anaya Peoples scored 17.

Creighton 75, Seton Hall 74

(OT): Morgan Maly picked up an Emma Ronsiek miss and scored at the buzzer to send the No. 3 seed Bluejays into a semifinal meeting with No. 2 Villanova.

Ronsiek led Creighton with 22 points and added seven rebounds.

Lauren Jensen added 16 and Maly 13 points and 10 rebounds. Lauren Park-lane led the No. 6 Pirates with 36 points and also had eight rebounds.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

St. Joe’s advances to Sweet 16

The University of Saint Joseph is onto the Sweet 16. The Blue Jays, ranked No. 4 in the nation in Division III, rolled past visiting Williams, 75-54, in an NCAA Tournament second-round game at West Hartford.

Up next is Wheaton, Ill., at a site to be determined on Friday.

Ryan O’neill led the way with 21 points as the Blue Jays cruised to a 44-22 lead at the half. Malcolm Eley added 14 points, while Jaecee Martin added 13 and Chaylyn Martin 10.

In Friday’s first-round game, Jaecee Martin led the way with 16 points in a 76-53 defeat of visiting Chatham University, also at West Hartford.

The Blue Jays led the Pittsburgh school 36-26 at halftime. Chaylyn Martin had 12 points for Saint Joe’s and O’neill added 11.
