-

A 43-year-old man allegedly tried to overdose on fentanyl as police were called to a Windsor Locks home on Sunday night for a stabbing incident, police said.

Windsor Locks Police Department officers were dispatched to a home on Elm Street for a reported stabbing just before 10 p.m. on Sunday. As officers arrived, dispatch told the officers that the suspect was threatening to overdose on fentanyl and attack police if he was still alive upon their arrival, police said.

A 31-year-old man suffering from knife wounds came out of the front door of the home as officers arrived, police said. There was blood on his face, side of his torso and left leg, according to police. The man reportedly claimed the 43-year-old man was the person who stabbed him.

Officers rendered aid to the victim and learned that the 43-year-old man was in a back room of the house allegedly attempting to overdose by fentanyl injection. Officers secured the home and attempted to locate him, according to police.

Police said they spotted the 43-year-old man through a window. He was allegedly pacing and visibly agitated in the dining room, according to police. Officers then entered the home and saw blood spattered on the floor. They located the 43-year-old man, who allegedly had a syringe against his neck injecting himself with suspected fentanyl, according to police.

Police said the man allegedly would not release the syringe as he stepped toward officers saying he wanted to die. As the man began to feel the effects of the drug, he became unconscious but was breathing, according to police. Medical personnel entered the home and gave him multiple doses of Narcan. As he was revived, police said he continued to be combative. He was restrained and sent to Hartford Hospital for treatment, according to police.

Investigators said the 43-year-old man reportedly came home under the influence of drugs. He was acting erratically and allegedly threatened to kill people, according to police. The victim then hit him with a baton to stop him from hurting people in the home and was then stabbed, police said.

The knife was recovered at the scene, police said.

The 43-year-old man, who is not being named by the Courant due to his alleged threats to harm himself, was secured at Hartford Hospital and charged with first-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment and disorderly conduct. He was scheduled to be arraigned on Monday.
