A teenager was killed in a crash on Interstate 84 Thursday when the car he was riding in struck a box truck and a tractor-trailer.

The crash was reported at 5:45 p.m. on I-84 West in the area of Exit 56, where 18-yearold Yomar Berrios of East Hartford suffered injuries “not compatible with life” during a three-vehicle crash, according to Connecticut State Police.

Following the collisions, the teen was taken to Hartford Hospital where he was pronounced dead, state police said. A 21-year-old New York man driving the Honda Accord in which Berrios was a passenger suffered minor injuries and was taken to Hartford Hospital, according to state police.

No other injuries were reported.

According to state police, the Honda was heading west in the center of five lanes behind a box truck and a tractor-trailer when the Honda driver “for an unknown reason” struck the rear of a box truck. The Honda then veered across the left center lane and entered the left lane before veering back over multiple lanes where it struck the rear of a tractor-trailer, state police said.

The drivers of both the box truck and the tractor-trailer then stopped in the center lane, while the Honda ended up in “an uncontrolled final rest” in the left center lane.

The tractor-trailer was later able to be driven away. The box truck and the Accord were towed away.

State police are still investigating the crash. They are asking any witnesses or those who were in the area with pertinent dashcam footage to contact Trooper Michael Dean at 860-534-1098 or through email at michael. dean@ct.gov.
