While commuter vehicles remain at inflated prices these days, manufacturers have to keep basic entry-level vehicles priced as attractively as possible.

For Volkswagen, this has never been a problem, as it delivers reliable and dependable entry-level vehicles fit for any consumer. A prime example is the 2023 VW Golf GTI. We tested the 40th Anniversary Edition in Pomelo Yellow with a black accent roof and plaid cloth stitching on the inside.

Powering the 40th Anniversary Golf GTI was a 2.0 TSI 16-valve DOHC turbo 4-cylinder engine that came with front-wheel drive and a 6-speed manual transmission. With plenty of get up and go, the Golf GTI was very fun to drive. Although larger than most commuter cars, the Golf GTI has long had a following of enthusiasts who thrive to enjoy them, and for good reason.

While the Golf GTI is roomy, comfortable and fun to drive, it does boast some basics that could use upgrades.

There’s no Siriusxm radio, forcing the consumer to stick to AM/FM radio; it comes with a basic four-year/50,000 mile warranty while others in the category are still offering the powerful 10-year/100,000 mile.

On the other hand, VW does include its scheduled carefree maintenance in the price, as well as 24-hour roadside assistance for three years.

Those looking for entry-level and commuter cars that are priced right have always flocked to VW, as its cars suit a lot of consumer needs. With good pricing, good appearance and safety/driver assistance standard features, the Golf GTI is an option that has been around for a long time. In Grasso’s Garage, we

appreciate vehicles with that kind of staying power.

Although the Pomelo Yellow is certainly not a color choice for me, Beetle lovers will appreciate it, as it could be the closest thing to that late, lamented VW icon.
