Former Red Sox outfielder Bradley signs with Atlantic League Long Island Ducks

-

It’s been four months since reports surfaced that Jackie Bradley Jr. was “expected” to retire from professional baseball.

Scratch that — Bradley isn’t done yet.

The former Red Sox outfielder signed a minor league contract with the Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League, the team announced Thursday. The Atlantic League is a professional partner league of MLB.

Bradley, who played 11 seasons in MLB, spent nine seasons in Boston from 2013-20 and 2022, batting .236/.315/.404 with 101 home runs and 405 RBIS. He was best known for his defense, earning a career fielding percentage of .986 and a 2018 Gold Glove Award.

“Jackie is an exceptional talent with a wealth of experience in the game,” said Ducks manager Lew Ford said in a release. “We are excited to add his veteran leadership and skill set at the plate and in the field to our roster.”

Bradley, 33, quickly became a star in Boston after the Red Sox drafted him 40th overall in the 2011 MLB Draft. He debuted on Opening Day in 2013 and had a breakout year in 2016, earning an All-star nod with a line of .267/.349/.486.

Bradley was instrumental in the Red Sox’ 2018 World Series run, leading Boston to its most wins in franchise history (108) and earning the honors as ALCS MVP for his heroics against the Astros. In that series, he posted a 1.067 OPS with two homers, nine RBIS, three runs, and four walks. Five games later, Boston hoisted the Commissioner’s Trophy for the first time since 2013.

Bradley spent two more seasons in Boston before signing a two-year, $24 million deal with the Milwaukee Brewers, but the Red Sox brought him back with another trade one year later. Halfway through that season, Bradley was designated for assignment and left Fenway Park for good. He spent time in the Blue Jays and Royals systems over the next few years but was designated for assignment and released in June.
