Walter J Daly
SARASOTA - Walter J Daly, 94, died on Saturday, April 6, 2024. He was born Jan 12, 1930, in Michigan City, Indiana, to Walter H Daly and Nellie Stipp Daly. He grew up in Muncie, IN, and graduated from Burris High School. He received a BA from Indiana University in 1951 and an MD in 1955. He joined the faculty there in 1962 after his army service. He served as Chair of the Department of Medicine from 1970-1983, and as Dean of the IU School of Medicine from 1983 until his retirement in 1995. He was awarded the School of Medicine’s Otis R Bowen Gold Medal in 1996, an Honorary DSc in 1998, and IU’s Bicentennial Medal in 2020, in recognition of his distinguished contributions and longstanding support of the university. He held office in several professional organizations, including the American College of Physicians, the American Medical Association, the American Clinical and Climatological Association, and the Central Society for Clinical Research. In retirement, he pursued research and writing about medieval medicine, especially the writings of Peter of Spain, and medical history in Indiana, including milk sickness and cholera.
Walter was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Joan Brown Daly. He is survived by 2 daughters, and 5 grandchildren.
Walter was an educator, a leader, a researcher, an academic. He loved his family, history, travel, and his Indiana heritage.
