It’s show time!

- LISA SAMUEL

No doubt Santa Fe is a special place! Many aspects of the “City Different” attract visitors all year round. I would like to draw your attention to the month of August in particular. One of the most special and oldest juried Native arts show in the world is boasted by Santa Fe, New Mexico. Indian Market began in 1922 and attracts 100,000 visitors from all over the world. Just so happens another great show, also part of an August event lineup that attracts thousands of visitors, is Hacienda— a Parade of Homes hosted by the Santa Fe Area Home Builders’ Association.

This world-class event spread over a two-week period is a showcase of the truly talented professionals in the design, construction, and green-building and architecture fields, as well as in interior design. This tour gives visitors an opportunity to enjoy a unique experience and building style that is truly exclusive to “Santa Fe Style.” The regional building materials used are creative and romantically rare to the city different. Santa Fe has long captured the hearts of many who visit the Parade ofHomes, Santa Fe Opera, and Indian Market and dine in our many exquisite restaurants. And many who visit are looking to make this unique city their home or part-time residence.

As you tour the unique homes this year, contemplate the vast number of people who contribute to their beauty and livability — themason, the landscape artist, the interior designer, the electricians, plumbers, and tile setters. The gross receipts from the home building industry help fund the very amenities and utilities we enjoy in Santa Fe. The ticket sales for the event itself have funded many charitable organizations such as Santa Fe Animal Shelter and Humane Society, the Big Brothers Big Sisters program, high-school athletic teams, and many more.

The Santa Fe Area Home Builders Association hosts this event and is a non-profit trade association of which I am a member. SFAHBA serves the residential building industry and related professions in Santa Fe and in Northern New Mexico. The members of this association are not only building contractors. There are local banks, granite and countertop fabricators, and cabinet makers. The business members contribute to the growth of our local economy and provide one of life’s basic needs: shelter.

At one time, the Parade of Homes was much larger than we are seeing in 2017. The 2008 crash really took a bite out of this industry, but the talent has not diminished one iota! The cream of the crop is still here and producing amazing and beautifully crafted homes. There is a gem out there waiting to be seen and it is the evolution of Santa Fe Style at its best. Please join us and log onto the SFAHBA website or look for the Haciendas Magazine for a schedule and ticket information and be part of enjoying the beauty and craftsmanship as well as support our community.
