We’d Love to Own: AQHA Babys Steady Star.

-

Details: 2012 AQHA gelding by Spooks Gotta Whiz and out of Oaks Steady Star, by Steadys Dude. Barn name: Mickey. Owned by: Michell Anne Kimball of Encinitas, California.

Trained and shown by: Matt Armenta of Whitesboro, Texas. Mickey blue eyes: When asked about his name, Kimball confides that the gelding was named by Armenta after the movie “Mickey Blue Eyes.” Similar to his sire, Mickey has a “big white face and pretty blue eyes,” says Armenta. Runt of the pasture: Though Kimball recalls Mickey as a small-sized baby, both she and Armenta knew he was special. “He was skinny and lanky, and wasn’t very cute, but there was something about his upright ears and the way he held his head that attracted me,” Armenta explains. “I’d never been around him. I just liked how he moved.” In-training transformation: Despite his awkward start, he came into his own. “He’s a great mover,” Kimball shares. “He doesn’t look unnatural or forced in his movement.” Armenta concurs: “He does all (reining) maneuvers well. He turns well, lopes pretty, and is a big stopper.” Work horse: “He loves his job.” Armenta boasts. “He’s talented, trainable, and has a good mind. He’s only had one tough training day. He felt a little fresh, so I let him play; then he was back to business.” Kimball shares: “He’s spectacular. He’s a good-minded colt and never quits trying.” Man’s best friend: “He’s a pet,” explains Armenta. “If I could take him home and put him in the back yard, I would. He likes people. Every single time I walk up to his stall he’ll nicker at me.” Kimball also describes him as humanlike in his interactions. “He’s really curious, but not in a spooky way. He’s childlike in his naïve wonderment,” she shares.
