In hu­mans, when arthri­tis be­comes far ad­vanced, it can end with joint re­place­ment (ar­ti­fi­cial im­plants), not cur­rently a vi­able op­tion for our equine com­pan­ions. Re­search is con­stantly look­ing into new ways to en­able ear­lier di­ag­no­sis, al­le­vi­ate symp­toms, and mod­ify the dis­ease process. Emerg­ing stud­ies in re­gen­er­a­tive medicine and al­ter­ing bone me­tab­o­lism at a molec­u­lar level may lead to some promis­ing fu­ture treat­ments to help bat­tle os­teoarthri­tis in the equine pa­tient.
